Award-Winning Career Consulting Services
by Kathryn Haizmann, President
Atherton Consulting, Inc.
Having worked with thousands of individuals over the years who are seeking better career choices and opportunities, I have identified
twelve principles which lead to career success....
1. Pursue a career that you are naturally good at and that you enjoy. Don't go against your own nature. If you haven't a clue as to
what this is, take a couple of reliable career tests, and perhaps get some professional career assessment guidance.
2. Pursue work for which there is a definite need in the world today, and for which there will be a growing, or at least a steady need
in the future. Researching this subject is something that is well worth your time.
3. Since the job market has become increasingly specialized, it behooves you to develop a couple of specializations in your field.
This gives you the opportunity to present yourself as an expert separate and apart from your competition in the job marketplace.
4. Create a "career advertising campaign" that... a) stresses your key selling points in the job market; b) is direct and readily
understandable to employers; c) distinguishes what you have to offer from your competitors. If you don't know how to do this,
get some professional help from marketing experts.
5. Identify which companies or other organizations have a need for someone with your skills, and then go after these companies
directly. Don't wait until the company has an advertised opening. Again, some effort spent on research is well worth your time.
6. Identify which of the organizations appropriate for someone like you are well managed and financially healthy. There are many
ways in which a company may be poorly run, and there are many thousands of poorly run companies. One of the worst career
mistakes you can make is going to work for one of them.
7. Blitz your campaign targets (your potential employers) from many angles and in many ways simultaneously. Don't rely on one
or two techniques, and don't be afraid to try new things to get through the door.
8. Conduct a personal, not merely an impersonal, job campaign. Just mailing or emailing your resume is usually not enough to
get noticed and uncover the best job for yourself. You must get face-to-face with hiring authorities and others in your field.
9. If what you are doing to find the right job is not working, be honest with yourself about this. Don't keep doing what doesn't work
and don't brood; instead, try a new approach.
10. Don't ever let your job campaign come to a halt just because you had a good interview, or because an employer expressed an
interest in you. Keep things going full force until you have begun working in your new job. And even then, try not to burn all your
bridges.
11. Once "installed" in a good job, don't lose touch with others in your field or industry, and try to keep up with the latest developments
in your field. The best time to network is when you're employed.
12. If you need a career or job change, absolutely commit yourself to taking action, and taking it now! Procrastination is one of the
biggest enemies of a successful career.
Implementing these principles can be involved and take time. However, doing so is quite rewarding, both financially and personally; it is
simply good career management.
